The Coat of arms of Saint Vincent and the
Grenadines is surmounted by a cotton plant and
bears the text "Peace and Justice" in Latin. The
centerpiece is based on the colonial badge in
use from 1907 to 1979 and features two
women in classical Roman dress. The one on
the heraldic right stands holding a olive branch,
and the one on the left holds scales of justice
and kneels before a gold altar situated between
them.
St. Vincent is about 18 mi (29 km) long and
11 mi (18 km) wide and is located 100 mi
(161 km) west of Barbados. The island is
mountainous and well forested. St. Vincent is
dominated by the volcano Mount Soufriere,
which rises to 4,048 ft (1,234 m).

The National Bird of St. Vincent and the
Grenadines is the St. Vincent Parrot also
known as Amazona guildingii or  St.
Vincent Amazon. It is the only type of
parrot on the island and is a large
beautiful colored bird about 16-18 inches
in length. The head is white, yellow and
violet. The neck is mostly green, the body
plumage is predominantly gold and brown
washed with green. The wings are
variegated and the tail green and violet
blue, broadly tipped with yellow.
The Grenadines, a chain of Island with total
area of only 17 sq mi (27 sq km), extend for
60 mi (96 km) between St. Vincent and
Grenada. The main islands in the Grenadines
are Bequia, Balliceau, Canouan, Mayreau,
Mustique, Isle D'Quatre, Petit Saint Vincent,
and Union Island.
Soufriere Volcano, At 1,234 m (4,048 ft), it
is the highest peak on the Island.
Soufriere violently erupted in 1718, 1812,
1902, 1971, and 1979. The eruption of May
7, 1902, killed 1,680 people. The last
recorded eruption was in April 1979; due to
advance warning there were no casualties.

Soufriere  is a stratovolcano, sometimes
called a composite volcano, is a tall, with
many layers (strata) of hardened lava,
tephra, and volcanic ash. Stratovolcanoes
are characterized by a steep profile and
periodic, explosive eruptions. The lava that
flows from stratovolcanoes cools and
hardens before spreading far.

Grenadines came into use officially on Monday
October 21, 1985.
The green diamonds are shaped in a V for St.
Vincent, and reflect the plural nature of the many
islands of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. These
gems define St. Vincent and the Grenadines as
the gems of the Antilles. The Blue represents the
sky and sea. the gold is for warmth, the bright
spirit of the people and the golden sands of the
Grenadines. The Green represents the lush
vegetation of St. Vincent’s agriculture and the
enduring vitality of the people. The Flag may be
called “The gems”.
